Maharishi Om On the subject of war
The subject of war became a running thread through the conversations I had with Maharishi Om on my last visit to see him. He spoke of the necessity of being aware of the political state of our world and of the potential for war that is at hand. He spoke of Islam in less then flattering terms and often brought up the clashes in Syria. We read a long article on Russia's weapon sales to Syria.
I did not want to be interested yet he persisted in telling me about the violence going on in our world. I am a meditator, a yogini, war does not have a place in my life. I didn't want to know, but it was my Guru bringing it to my attention. He told me there had to be an awareness about the potential for war that is at hand. I guess he thought people were not paying attention, obviously I was not.
Back home a brief glimpse at the news shouted out at me like never before. Turkish Islam, Hezbollah, Syria, Istanbul, Afghanistan even Santa Monica, California. The unrest was palpable.
The next time I visited Guruji he continued in the same vein, "The possibility of a Third World War started on Sept. 11, 2001. Check the data, how many war related deaths since 9/11?" I did a quick 'google' check even though the idea seemed daunting and there were innumerable war related death statistics worldwide since 2001.
The real war scenario he said, is that on one side there is Syria, Iran, Iraq, Russia and China, and on the other side, Saudi Arabia, (in the 2ND person), Qatar, Kuwait, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. {Saudi Arabia supports extremist Sunni Muslims, Iraq, Iran and Syria support the Shiite Muslim}
While America, Britain, France, Israel- watch. 'They may or may not join. They are involved. They offer 'humanitarian' support, some say they are supplying weapons.
Has World War 3 already started? These countries are sending soldiers and weapons, they do not announce it, but it is a reality.
Guruji spoke of the Nostradamus, predictions for our time saying Nostradamus predicted there would be a big disaster in the middle east and in Africa. Nostradamus foretold there was a possibility millions would be killed.
Then Maharishi Om said, "Human beings are not evolved in the arena of peace. At home they fight among family members and neighbors, there are many differences based on language, ethnicity, color and religion. Human beings are divided as never before. Differences are high. Big corporations and governments are fighting over resources. The people should be aware of this, they are entrapped. They should avoid violent discussions, move to safer areas. Some places are safer then others- with less crime rate. Even though there is plenty of food and natural resources are available, people are still dying of hunger because of mismanagement and business people will suffer due to their mismanagement."
Guruji only wanted me to be aware and to bring awareness to others so that we do not enter into war blindly, ignorantly. Be Awake and Aware! that is Maharishi Om's motto. When we are aware of the existence of the possibility of harm we can at least prepare to move out of it's way.
Maharishi Om also spoke to me of Lord Krishnas' tactics in battle. In the stories of the great epic, Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna retreated more then once, he pulled back from war in order to save lives.
That Memorial Day weekend and subsequent days with my Guru have expanded my world view and have given me a new sense of care and concern for my world family. May we one day all live in harmony with one another.

Mother Consciousness
My holy children
I Am always and forever your Holy Divine Mother.
Turn to me when your heart is heavy. I will dry your tears I will give you a reason to smile. You are my precious children, my love. When I look at you I see all of God's glorious manifestations.
I have dreamed you into existence. I have created you from my own cells and the soil of the earth. I have carried you in my body. I have birthed you. I have breathed life into your soul. I have set you down upon the earth and I have watched you grow. I will always guard and protect you.
Mother cares for the well being of all.
The word 'Mother' can be said to be the most adored word on earth.
The word mother in every language means the same thing, my haven, my protectress, my guide.
The Holy Divine Mother of the Universe is love.
The Holy Divine Mother of the Universe is love that is given.
The Divine Mother Consciousness is the Holy home to all hearts.
The love of Mother is the safe harbor to the soul of humanity.
Divine Mother Consciousness is the New Consciousness of life.
Where there is love, compassion and mercy Mother is present.
Divine Mother lives in the present moment.
To dwell in the heart of Mother be kind. Mother loves her children's kind expressions towards one another.
Turn your gaze to Mother and she will shower you with love and affection.
Her love is personal, direct, intimate. Her heart is on fire with infinite Divine love for all of creation.
Open your heart wide to the joy and bliss of your Mothers' love. Let her pour forth all of the love she has in store for you.
She will shower you with rays of Universal consciousness that will awaken you from your deep slumber, so that you may live in light.
Awaken now my children! Awaken to the love and light that is yours. Mother waits silently beside you. I am your Mother, I am always close by. If you fall I will help you up and nudge you to carry on. No need for tears my child. I have cried for you.
Be at peace. Be joyful. That is what Mother loves to see. Mothers' heart is overflowing with love for her children. You are never alone.
Mothers' tears come only when her children suffer. Then her heart is in pain.
When Mothers' heart is in pain even the earth suffers. All is connected my children.
The heart beat which is Divine Mother is the cause of life. Her breath is the pulse of the Universe. It is all one. The unity of all creation beats in the heart of Divine Mother. The universe is alive with her breath and heartbeat. She is the whole and the one. All is inside of her. She is the cause and the reason for creation. Because of and through Divine Mother all has come to be. She is in all things and all beings. Know her through laughter, through joy, through hope and aspirations. Praise her with success and achievements. Love her through the care and comforting you give to the ones who suffer. Save the holy souls who have lost their way, from fear and sorrow, from depression and mental illness. Know she is the protector and guide.
Mother is here.
Mother is always with you.
Loneliness is a word which says, I have no Mother, horror is a word which says Mother is not here to see me do these terrible things, no one can see.
Mother sees.
Know that, 'Mother is here and is always with me'.
I Am the Holy Divine Mother of the Universe. I Am here with you.
I Am always with you.
I Am always your Mother
Let us all be Divine.
Mother is here.

Maharishi Om Speaks on The Eternal Om
Our spiritual lives begin with our first breath. At that moment a commitment is made to us by the Divine. Divine says 'I am always with you'. The Divine says to the newly born, you do not have to do any thing consciously, yet life will be breathed into you everyday, every moment. As long as the body is alive there will be breath, and so it is. We can live an entire lifetime busying ourselves with the mundane not even noticing that we breathe. We Breathe! It is a phenomenal occurrence yet so often it happens unconsciously in humans.
There are many, many secrets wise sages and ancient yogis have uncovered about the power of breath control, bodily control, and mind control. They have taught us through example that we can be the rulers of our own existence. We do not have to live unconsciously. The secrets they have shared over time on breath control alone are mind boggling. The evolution of humanity is at hand here. The attainment of higher states of consciousness can be had through breath control. All Mahatmas (great souls) know this. They also know that the time to share the secrets of evolution has come. Knowledge can no longer be kept secret. Knowledge is being given now to those who are ready to receive it.
Maharishi Om shared with a small group recently, such knowledge with the intention that it be further shared. It is a practice using the breath and the primordial sound of the Eternal Om that can awaken consciousness.
I was fortunate to be among the group to whom Maharishi Om spoke on the subject of the creation energy of the universe and the Eternal Om. What follows are the highlights of his talk...
Maharishi Om/ Eternal Om
There is an infinite energetic pulsation which permeates the Universe. This energy is responsible for all manifested things. Matter originates from this energy. God's particles originate from this energy. All planetary formations come from this energy. This Divine energy is the source of all living creation. This energy is the life force of all that is. Its' sound is energy, its' sound is the Eternal Om. This is the primordial sound of the universe.
Chanting 'Om' connects you to your own true source within. Reciting 'Om' in a rhythmical way calms down sensual urges and takes you deep within yourself where inner peace resides and where vibration is positive. Positive vibes come from this rhythmic chanting which give a feeling of fullness, wholeness, a feeling of being complete.
The Eternal Om energy connects consciousness to Natural Law.
Rhythmic chanting of Eternal Om merges consciousness into collective consciousness.
The rhythmic, silently chanted Om takes one to the bliss state of consciousness. One established in this blissful state experiences ananda and shanti, bliss and peace, self contentment (peace with self). Bliss, peace and great satisfaction are experienced.
A long inhalation while chanting Om in silence and continuing chanting Om in silence while holding the breath as long as possible can generate Divine energy. Repeated practice causes ones' self to merge into Supreme Self or Unity Consciousness.
Using the same long inhalation/ exhalation while chanting Om out loud, just before dawn, on an empty stomach, facing east, for 24 minutes causes one to become free of sickness and possibly self realized if the practice is done with dedication and without missing a single day for six months. By practicing continuously without missing a day, one can merge self consciousness with other planets.
The person who practices this gains power, understanding and knowledge of nature, planets, birds, animals, their wants, their message.
During the dedicated six months of practice, one should repeat each night before sleep, while lying in savasana (corpse pose):
I AM THAT
I Am not This Body
I Am Separate From This Body
This Body is a Vessel
I Am Energy
Repeat these affirmations once, then sleep. You will feel like an observer of your own dream, you may have out of body experiences.
You will become higher then the trigunas (highest states).
Become like a lamp that does not flicker.
This is the essence of OM

The Call to Enlightenment
All around me people are awakening, There is a new energy beckoning the self to meditate. It quickens the awareness of higher self with even the slightest effort. A simple moment of quietude with closed eyes and stillness of breath and one enters the infinite heavenly realms where the divine awaits.
There is joy in the faces of the people who feel the energy of a few minutes of daily meditation. It is the elation of self immersed in the Divine.
The earth herself has been lifted into the highest spiritual realms, her selfless service and devotion to humanity
has carried us along with her. The all that is has become aware that all has merged with what has always been, the holy precious expanse of divinity, call it God, call it awakened self. I am that I am.
The following paragraph is from the Yajur Veda 32.11:
Find the eternal object of your quest
within your soul.
Enough have you wandered during the
long period of your quest!
Dark and weary must have been the
ages of your searching in ignorance
and groping in helplessness;
At last when you turn your gaze
inward, suddenly you realize that the
bright light of faith and lasting truth
was shining around you.
With rapturous joy, you find the soul
of the universe, the eternal object of your quest.
Your searching mind at last
finds the object of the search within
your own heart.
Your inner vision is illuminated by this
new realization

The Guidance of a Guru
The guidance of a guru often takes the most subtle of forms, sometimes it is the things that have not been said that offer the most guidance.
This type of guidance says, 'you' are the expert on 'you'. It is this type of Guru guidance that states explicitly, 'I am here standing by. I trust you. You are doing everything right.'
These are sentiments that Maharishi Omji has set forth into my consciousness, not always in words, but with his ability to penetrate deeply and thoroughly into the heart of any matter which is of concern to me. Guruji will give guidance. He will give insight and wisdom to any situation, but it is when I am most in need or more specifically most in want of someone to tell me exactly what I should do that he says nothing.
During those times when nothing seems to be working out as I think it should, and I'm feeling my emotions ruffled, my gut unsettled, Guruji will phone, relieved I will pour everything out and wait for his response but rather then answer or console he will say, 'We will talk tomorrow.'
It has long since become apparent to me that -'we will talk tomorrow' is code for we won't be talking for awhile. Whenever he says those words, I sigh and resign myself to waiting.
One of Guruji's teachings is on the 10 qualities of Dharma, in my notebook in bold letters is written this one of the ten...GREAT PATIENCE.
Waiting is a pet peeve and obviously one of my life lessons. I seem to always be waiting. Even the I-Ching conspired with Guruji recently when I sought insight from that oracle on progress that seemed to be going too slow. The I-Ching said in so many words: Wait. Things take time to develop.
It is usually during the time of waiting that all of my concerns resolve themselves, if I remain calm and adaptable, steady and determined, content myself with my sadhana. Slowly, diliberately the Universe begins to cultivate the path of certainty for me, if I can allow things to develop naturally, everything seems to fall into place. I begin to feel an inner elation. Everything works out better than could have been imagined and then my Guruji comes to mind. I remember his words, "Have faith in the Divine and you will do just fine," suddenly I am filled with the sensation that everything has worked out for me because he has done it all. Of course he will give all credit to the Divine, but something inside tells me he has mitigated, possibly pleaded with the Divine on my behalf, but not only on my behalf, he does it for all; he takes on suffering for the ills of all of humanity. Who else would take pain into themselves so that another need not suffer. This is what Guruji does silently, often those around him are not aware of the pain he is enduring.
Is it possible? I never doubt it. Guruji is a phenomonon on earth. All of humanity is blessed by such a Divine presence. His support is always felt and his guidance is like a precious gem to be treasured.
The Ten Qualities of Dharma:
Great Patience
Forgiveness
Discipline of the Senses
Courage
Knowledge
Truth
Calmness
Non- Stealing
Cleanliness

The Magical Mystical Mind and Maharishi Om
In this blog I am about to do something I have never done before. That is to publicly expose in writing the apparitions of my mind.
As a long time meditator and devotee of the Divine I have come to believe that visions are a part of the experience of a spiritual life. In vision I have journeyed through seven galaxies, explored underworlds, rode wildly on a speeding chariot, swam deep into the ocean and landed on an island that was completely dry but deep beneath the sea. I have traversed through space and time. I have experienced the beginning of creation, Dante's version of hell and been carried on the back of Lord Shiva in a chair made of white marble. All in the realm of mind during meditation and the dream state.
Therefore it did not seem unusual to me when after several days of fasting on water alone a vision filled meditation beckoned.
The call to meditate on this particular day was overwhelmingly urgent.
The moment I closed my eyes I saw Maharishi Omdev. His piercing gaze was fixed upon me. I opened my eyes with a snap and looked at the time. 5:40 p.m. The date was 5/4. That seemed curious.
I closed my eyes again and let myself merge with the quiet still energies that mark the start of my deeper meditations.
Maharishi Om- (Guruji's) face appeared again in my minds' eye. The expression on his face was serious and he had the force of authority about him.
In my vision his power seemed even more magnified. This was a person that had the ability and strength to do anything, even command the Universe. I felt the excitement of awe at his presence that I might have felt if a superhero were standing in front of me.
Here is a secret: (Since meeting Maharishi Om I have had the underlying sense that he is one of the great, powerful and possibly terrifying masters of the Universe, disguised as a kind and humble religious man living in Temples and dressed in orange clothing).
All at once in my vision he was transformed. He was dressed head to toe in the garb of an ancient warrior. Like some powerful ancient god he stood before me all in white with his hair blowing wildly in the thunderous night. He kept his unblinking eyes focused in my direction. He was pure strength.
I sensed a motion like a helicopter circling. I saw Guruji's arms waving with the grace, stealth and precision of a ninja. He created incredibly fast circles in the air. The energy all around us began to spin at a terrific rate of pace. The movement of his arms created fierce powerful jolts of spinning energy. The propelling movement, spinning faster and faster was causing us to move backward in time.
I realized he was taking me on a journey to an ancient realm. I knew instantly where we were. I caught a glimpse of Lord Hanuman and began to cry.
'Guruji is the Lord of the Wind!' I thought to myself.
At that moment he was the wind.
It was an ancient time. I saw myself as Sita.
'I am Sita!'
The Lord of the Wind carried Hanuman toward me. I was rescued. All that had been stolen had been retrieved. I saw the glorious Goddess, Mother Durga. When I saw Guruji again he was radiant and powerful like a King. His heart was blazing in fiery white light. Then I saw him transform again. He became the Goddess. He was the male version of the Divine Mother, Durga. He was the male counterpart to Durga.
Suddenly my meditation ended. I opened my eyes trembling from the incredible ostentatious grandeur of this vision in meditation.. I sat quietly wondering at the way the mind could allow one to experience a vision with so much detail and have it feel so real.
This had to have been one of my most incredible visions. It stunned me. But I was left with an amazing feeling of expanded energy and empowerment.
There was more to this vision, I have not disclosed it all. But it is enough to show the magnificence of the magical, mystical mind and to show that we may all be much more then we perceive ourselves to be.
By the way, when the meditation ended the time was 5:54p.m. All of that happened in fourteen minutes, it felt like a lifetime.

When a Holy Man Perceives....
When a holy man perceives changes that need to be made in society for the betterment of all of humanity, to be sure these are matters of urgency.
When I read the first chapter of Maharishi Omdev's forth coming book, 'Siksha Patri- Perception', I was struck by the greatness of a mind which could look at society and pin-point those areas that would mean vast improvements in each persons livelihood if they were only implemented.
As a Visionary and Spiritual Man of Wisdom, Maharishi Omdev has undertaken the prospect of giving the average person a glimpse at the way a profoundly spiritual being views society as it is, and the changes that could mean a vastly improved state of being for each individual.
In the book, 'Siksha Patri- Perception', his concern is for the environment we provide for our children as they are being raised and an education system that favors the fortunate and sadly leaves economically challenged children in the dark. He understands completely that 'education enhances dignity and increases self respect'.
The idea that he puts forth, that 'the ignited mind of a Yogi' in the education system would elevate the element of spirituality in society and create more conscious humans gives a person something to think about.
With encouragement he suggests that thoughtfully providing an environment where children are taught by educators who themselves are disciplined and confident with positive habits would carry over and these positive traits would be imbibed by the children.
His insight into the way children could be taught to pursue a love of learning is simple and clear, 'a happy learning process and non- threatening evaluation.'
He sees the need for including a class on 'moral science' in schools and colleges as being of utmost importance. He believes that this moral education should start for the child as early as seven years old, 'when the blueprint of the mind is formed'. This is a profound concept. It is amazing that no one else has ever brought this up before. Clearly the moral standards of many Americans leaves much to be desired. His idea of teaching morals as a science would be a boon to society.
My favorite passage in his writing is his referral to knowledge as having four components the fourth of which he stated as being an, 'Indomitable Spirit.' I was struck by a sense of awe when I read that term. It brought to mind all of the people I have ever considered as great in my life. Those unconquerable souls who no manner of strife or struggle could hold back. I love that term.
But at a deeper level Maharishi Omdev gives sageness to what he realizes is a common tendency in many individuals. That is to know what the appropriate behavior would be in a given situation and nevertheless act in a way that is opposed to it.
The mind knows what the correct behaviour should be, yet the action does not follow. He calls this 'knowing perfectly, but acting imperfectly.' From his standpoint it is one of the most common drawbacks keeping society from evolving spiritually.
He advises the individual to analyze their actions. This is a little known practice used by 'seekers' or those following a spiritual path.
Maharishi Omdev suggests the practice of daily introspection. By reviewing the acts one performs each day, and analyzing which of those acts brought happiness and which were unpleasant or caused unhappiness and by not repeating the one that brought unhappiness or unpleasantness, the individual could eventually rid themselves of suffering.
Another key-point for Maharishi Omdev is the topic of the 'False Leader.' When I asked him if this topic were not a subject for a separate chapter he told me that this is part of what needs to be perceived.
From Maharishi Omdev's wise perspective, Education, Spiritual Practice, False Leaders, The Nature of Consciousness and Love are all related and when seen with a 'Perception' of awareness can help the individuals and ultimately the world's tranformation to a higher evolved consciousness.

Be Awake and Aware!
Anyone who has spent time with Maharishi Om, (‘Guruji’ as he is affectionately called by those close to him) will have heard him say, ‘Be awake and aware!’ These simple words of wisdom are deep with meaning. And by sincerely following these instructions our perception of the world around us will be enhanced.
To be awake implies that one has become on the alert and alive to something, (our life?). To be awake is to be fully conscious.
The word aware is even more impressive. In the dictionary it states that to be aware is to be watchful, to have or show realization, perception or knowledge. To be aware implies vigilance in observing or alertness in drawing inferences from what one experiences.
Spending time with Guruji is an auspicious blessing. Recently I had the good fortune of a few afternoons in his Divine presence. His quiet tone and kind mannerisms belied the depth of his words. His phrases were rich in wisdom. He shared his wealth of wisdom casually and with the utmost simplicity. I began jotting down some of the things he said because I knew I would want to remember them.
Although the following information and statements were given in answer to questions asked or in reference to the conversation at the time, these words stand on their own significantly as divine guidance.
(Apologies if I have interpreted anything incorrectly. Any mistakes are mine.)
Dharma:
10 QUALITIES OF DHARMA:
Great Patience (Dhairy)
Forgiveness (Chama)
Purity of Thought (Dama)
Not Stealing (Asteya)
Cleanliness (shauch)
Discipline of Senses (Self Control)
Courage (Dheer)
Knowledge (Vidya)
Truth (Sathyam)
Calmness (Akroda)
Aachara Hina Na Dunanti Veda:
Dunanti- purify
Aachara Hina- Improper behavior
Na- Not
Veda- Teaching
It means: Those who know perfectly, but act imperfectly, even the Vedas cannot purify them. In other words, A person might know the appropriate way to act, but still acts inappropriately, therefore, even the Vedas can not purify him.
When we depart from this earth the one thing that goes with us is Dharma. Neither family, friends, money goes with us. Only Dharma stays with you. and only Dharma can protect you when no one is with you.
Dharma means righteous deed
If we have Dharma we don’t need anyone to save us, and no one can save us.
Personal Responsibility:
Cleanliness is everything, not just washing your clothes, putting on a scent, dressing nicely, Internal Cleaning!
If you know it, it is your responsibility to tell the truth. If you do not know it, it is not your responsibility.
Misguiding for your own benefit is punishable by the Divine.
Bringing misery to other peoples lives is a crime
Don’t compare yourself with anyone.
Don’t be jealous. Jealousy is a sin.
In a hurry do not do anything.
llusion:
Under the influence of illusion and greed we do things that hurt us.
Happiness is not connected with things.
Happiness is connected with thoughts
People are trying to change the outer environment, but they do not want to change their inner environment.
Self Study:
Working on thought and understanding these, that is called self study.
Self Study=Swadhya
How do you do self study? You observe your senses and behavior and you correct it.
Conflict of Thought:
Conflicting thought makes you uncomfortable. In that situation a hurricane comes (to your mind)
Conflict of thought is called a mental hurricane. At the time of a mental hurricane do not do anything, just stay in one place and wait until the worst of the ‘hurricane’ moves away. Once the hurricane is cleared away you can see everything clearly.
When a mental hurricane is there you can hurt yourself.
In this type of situation accept the unbiased advise of friends, relatives or teacher. Accept it as though the Divine is providing shelter, do not ignore it.
Self Doubt:
Don’t put yourself in self doubt. If you don’t know, find out the truth
Those who have self doubt can destroy themselves. (Study the Gita) on how to rid the self of doubt. Inquire. Accept the truth.
Sensual Pleasure:
(See) If the outcome of sensual pleasure is pleasant and not harmful to your thought in any way.
Some behaviors are temporarily pleasant.
Discover what causes the unpleasant, then do not repeat it.
Spiritual Life:
Spiritual life means you should be happy. You should have what you need. Everyone has basic needs of food and a home with space for a guest.
It is not necessary to have more then you need.
When you feel pain in your heart like a tightened fist, that is sadness. Meditate on the Anahata- heart chakra and the third eye together. That combines emotion with wisdom.
Read the Gita, then think about it, sequence, connection and intention of Lord Krishna to Arjuna
Listen and analyze. In any analyzation you need to see Lord Krishna’s intention. Why did he say that? What will be the result.
The Divine:
Believe in the Divine, good karma and truth. You will see justice and you will succeed.
A good prayer to Mother Divine: Thank you for everything. I do not deserve that much. You are most generous.
You can deceive anyone but not the Divine.
Guruji:
Whatever I want for myself I have to give to others.
How can I get peace if I don’t give it?
There is no permanent answer for everyone, it is person to person. Each case is individual.
Judge me through my actions, not my speech.
If they want to ask Guruji’s opinion, he will give it.
If they want to ask something, Guruji can say when.
Have faith in the Divine you will do just fine.

Maharishi Om
I am still reeling with thoughts of the evening I spent with Maharishi Om last week. I was invited quite spontaneously to a small gathering at the home of an acquaintance. A phone call.
"Come," they said "He wants to meet you."
An Indian saint was visiting. He was only twenty minutes away! Why would he want to meet me? But when I arrived I felt instantly that I already knew him and he knew me. As we spoke I felt he knew me better then I knew myself.
It is always a great blessing to meet an incredible being on earth.
In my time I have met many beings alive with the sacred energy of love and light, enlightened beings like Maharishi Om. Living Buddhas. Humans who by many lifetimes of severe and austere practices of total devotion to advancing the soul have attained the highest pinnacle of human evolution in this lifetime, Enlightenment and beyond.
The soul one day remembers the true purpose of its existence and begins a ceaseless endeavor to reclaim its birthright, self realization. Or as in the story of the Buddha realizing the mind with its ceaseless desires as the cause of dissatisfaction with life seeks to find a way out of the suffering.
Buddha sought a teacher and techniques to bring peace of mind yet later gave up his teachers.
Endeavoring on a spiritual path brings it's own pain as we stumble along making mistakes, following the wrong path, following teachings that do not suit and teachers that are still evolving themselves. It is fair to warn the novice that not all spiritual teachers are necessarily good. Not all Gurus are enlightened, not all Gurus mean well. The Buddha left his teachers when they could not help him find what he was looking for, peace of mind, and the end to suffering.
Being fooled into believing someone is a true and sincere spiritual teacher is not difficult. Considering there is no way to gauge the caliber of a teacher unless a person has attained some level of advancement themselves. Pinning all of their hopes of spiritual evolvment on the teacher, the spiritual aspirant opens. Vulnerable and completely accepting, the heart is handed over in exchange for the soul's evolvement.
The student believes the teacher is selfless and godlike. And in many cases the Guru does not disappoint.
But if it is found out that the Guru too has desires and is not free of greed or impure actions it can make continuing on the spiritual path a challenge.
My message is take heart! There are Gurus of impeccable integrity. Many of them enlightened beings from India.
I once heard a self proclaimed master say enlightened beings are what India produces, like technology from Japan and medical advancement from Germany, India's product is enlightened beings. Yet the Indian population is full of skeptics. They consider most if not all gurus to be charlatans, fakirs and to use an English term, fakes.
It is the non-Indian follower on a spiritual path who is more willing to place the mystical, exotic, possessor of mysteries and secrets on a pedestal. What does one hope to gain by this association? What would possess a person to give up autonomy? Because ultimately, to follow a Guru is be told what to do, how to live and even how to worship.
'Guru' is a Sanskrit word commonly used to mean spiritual teacher. Maharishi Om says, 'Guru means true guide, like a mother.'
But Guru is also known to mean one who dispels darkness or one who leads a person from darkness to light.
It is the hope of coming out of the dark that draws the sincere seeker. The hope of truly knowing oneself. A seeker is more often then not plagued with questions. 'Is this all there is to life? Who am I? Why am I here? Why do I feel like there is something I do not know?' All at once the seeker will proclaim, 'I WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH!' And as they say, when the student is ready a teacher will appear.
Probably from India.
There have been scandals surrounding Gurus for as long as there have been Gurus. Any novice westerner would be hard pressed to understand why one of the most beloved Hindu gods- Lord Krisha, had hundreds, possibly thousands of lovers. This is considered a divine leela, (a cosmic play performed on this plane instead of in the heavenly realms). And the Hindu epic Ramayana tells of the great and noble slayer of demons, Lord Rama who asked of his wife who 'might' have been untrue to walk into the fire to appease his distrustful followers.
In the years since the early 1970's I have been following Gurus and over the years have watched many modern day 'leelas' as they transpired. Baba Muktananda, Rajneesh-aka-Osho were both scrutinized for their interactions with devotees and Rajneesh for his accumulation of unfathomable wealth. More recently Vishwananda and Nithyananda have been surrounded by similar scandals, yet they continue to have followers.
To follow a guru is to trust completely that your soul is safe in their care and keeping.
Ultimately the truth of our nature lies within each of us. The answer to the question, Who am I? can not be found outside of the self. And although the spiritual teacher can point out the way, can show the techniques, and even carry part of the burden, the work has to be done by our self. We must be willing to sit in quiet introspection. It is written in the Bhagavad Gita that any effort will garner results. I was often comforted by this line said to be God speaking to the disciple, 'Take one step towards Me I will take ten towards you.'
We must be willing to give attention to the ceaseless clamoring of the minds' inner chatter. For in truth like a child demanding attention, a child who will not stop until it is given what it wants, the thoughts in our mind require attention. To give time to the mind, to sit and observe the thoughts and the process of thinking is to have made a quantum leap on your personal path to awakening. The answer to the questions we seek are within. The water in a torrential rain storm is no different from the water in a calm lake or the tear in your eye. The ache in your heart and those tears are a part of the quest to awaken to the truth that lies waiting to be known.
I AM THAT!
